How to become a counsellor in London

The routes, the training rules that changed in 2026, the costs that sit outside the course fee and what happens to loans in January 2027. Every fact links to the body that sets it.

Counselling is not a protected title

Anyone in the UK can call themselves a counsellor or psychotherapist: the titles are not protected by law, and the Government has decided talking therapies do not need statutory regulation (BPC). CPCAB describes a Level 4 Diploma as the current minimum for practice (CPCAB).

What protects clients instead is registration. The Professional Standards Authority accredits voluntary registers for practitioners who are not regulated by law (Professional Standards Authority). BACP, UKCP, NCPS and BPC all hold accredited registers, so the register a course leads to matters more than the course title.

A few related titles are protected. Art psychotherapist, art therapist and counselling psychologist can only be used by people registered with the HCPC (HCPC).

The usual path: three stages over three to four years

BACP describes three stages that together take about three to four years: an introductory course of 8 to 12 weeks, a certificate in counselling skills of about a year part-time, then core practitioner training (BACP).

With CPCAB, the most common awarding body for college courses, the route runs from Level 2 counselling skills, through the Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Studies, to the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (CPCAB). The prices on this site are for the practitioner stage, which is where most of the cost sits.

BACP's rules changed for courses starting from February 2026

For courses starting on or after 1 February 2026, BACP asks for practitioner training at Level 4 or above with at least two years of classroom tuition, a minimum of 300 guided learning hours and a supervised placement of at least 100 client hours. At least 70% of tuition must be face to face, and courses taught only online or by distance learning do not qualify (BACP). The change follows the SCoPEd framework, which the main professional bodies use to set shared training standards (BACP).

To join BACP's register you need either a BACP-accredited course or a pass in the Certificate of Proficiency, an online assessment based on case studies (BACP, BACP). The BACP-approved version of the CPCAB Level 4 Diploma lets learners sit the Certificate of Proficiency at their centre (CPCAB).

Psychotherapy routes take longer

UKCP describes psychotherapist training as postgraduate, at level 7, usually taking three to six years part-time and generally four years of taught training, with about 450 supervised client hours. Its psychotherapeutic counsellor route is at Level 5 and needs no prior degree (UKCP).

Psychoanalytic trainings ask the most of trainees' own time and money. BPC's criteria for psychoanalytic psychotherapy require the trainee's own therapy at least three times a week, in person, from a year before seminars start until qualification (BPC).

Costs that sit outside the course fee

23 of the 41 London courses on this site list personal therapy or personal counselling outside the fee. Other costs come from the professional bodies and checks you will need while you train:

Personal therapy and private supervision are priced by individual practitioners, so we do not publish an average. The calculator lets you add the quotes you get, and what it costs to become a counsellor in London compares totals by route.

Loans: what changes in January 2027

An Advanced Learner Loan can cover Level 3 to 6 courses at approved colleges and training providers in England, if you are 19 or over on the first day of the course and meet the residency rules (GOV.UK).

For Level 4 to 6 courses starting from January 2027, the Lifelong Learning Entitlement replaces Advanced Learner Loans, with applications from late October 2026. Providers not registered with the Office for Students can keep offering Advanced Learner Loans for their existing approved courses until 2029–30 (GOV.UK). Ask the provider which one applies to your start date.

What the London fees show

Of the 13 London Level 4 diplomas listed here, 9 publish every year of the fee. Their tuition to qualification runs from £4,429.43 to £9,860, with a median of £6,600. Postgraduate and psychotherapy trainings cost more and run longer, and universities publish fees per year, module or credit, so most of their totals stay blank.

The gap between courses is wide enough that the course fee alone is a poor guide. Add the years of personal therapy and supervision a course requires before comparing.
